PR70 Grade 2009 Lincoln Anniversary Silver Dollar and Cents Set

On February 12, 2009, in honor of the 200th anniversary of Abraham Lincoln's birth, the United States Mint released a magnificent commemorative one ounce Silver Dollar. It was issued in a very limited edition–just 500,000 coins were struck in Brilliant Uncirculated and Proof condition. The U.S. Mint also issued four different one-cent coins in recognition of the 100th anniversary of the Lincoln Penny. The coins offered here are in certified Proof PR70 quality with a DCAM (deep cameo) finish.

The obverse of the Silver Dollar features an image of President Lincoln with the inscriptions LIBERTY IN GOD WE TRUST and 2009. The reverse features those immortal last 43 words of his most famous speech – The Gettysburg Address – encircled in a laurel wreath placed at its center. Above the wreath is the inscription UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, and below you’ll see a curling banner with Lincoln's signature incused in the center.

The reverse designs of each cent represent the four major aspects of President Lincoln's life:

Birth and early childhood in Kentucky (1809-1816) The reverse features a log cabin that represents his humble beginnings in Kentucky with the inscriptions, "United States of America," "E Pluribus Unum," "One Cent" and "1809."

Formative years in Indiana (1816-1830) This reverse depicts a young Lincoln reading while taking a break from working as a rail splitter in Indiana.

Professional Life in Illinois (1830-1861) This design shows Lincoln as a young professional standing in front of the state capitol building in Springfield.

Presidency in Washington, DC (1861-1865) The half-finished United States Capitol dome is featured on this coin’s reverse, symbolizing a Nation torn apart by civil war and the resolve Lincoln showed as he guided the country through its most grave crisis. It was in front of the rising dome that Lincoln began his Presidency and under the completed dome that his body lay in state.

Each coin is graded in flawless PR70, by ANACS, an independent third party grading company. Proof coins are unlike regular U.S. coins, because they are struck at least twice on highly polished coin blanks to bring out the mirrored background and high-relief images. They look very different from regular U.S. coins – and because of the extra time it takes to strike each coin, only a limited number of Proof coins are produced each year. They are never made again.

In addition, the coins have a Deep Cameo finish – abbreviated DCAM. Deep cameo coins have a spectacular mirrored background and deeply frosted images. The contrast is quite dramatic. The raised areas are so frosted that they can appear white while the background appears to be black. This limited edition Commemorative Lincoln Set is a true collector’s treasure–don’t miss out!
