Columbian Expo Half Dollar 1st US Commemorative Coin
Well over a century ago, in 1892, the first commemorative coin in America’s history was struck to celebrate the 400th anniversary of Columbus’ discovery of the brave New World. Designed by legendary Master Engravers Charles E. Barber and George T. Morgan (of Morgan Dollar fame), these .900 fine silver coins were originally sold at the World’s Fair in Chicago. At the time, it took a full day’s pay for U.S. citizens to acquire these silver commemoratives. Sadly, not many of these coins remain on the scene today. Because it were the very first American commemorative coin ever issued, no collection would be complete without one – they are truly a national treasure. Due to age and scarcity these coins are available in circulated condition. A free velveteen display box accompanies each coin.
