Capped Bust Liberty Silver Half Dollar

In the early 1800s, Silver Half Dollars were considered the “workhorse” of circulating coinage. The Capped Bust design was created by John Reich, a German immigrant.  Originally an indentured servant, a US Mint official recognized his skills and ability to design beautiful American coins and freed him from a bond of servitude.  Reich designed an elegant version of Lady Liberty, which was used on many different denominations during the early part of the 19th Century.

As these coins saw use in daily commerce, almost all of them today show varying degrees of wear and surface damage.  True uncirculated specimens are very difficult to find and sell for $1,500 or more.  But in collectible F (Fine) condition, this coin is quite a collector’s bargain.  Plenty of rich detail still remains on the surface of these scarce, yet affordable coins.  Each coin is protectively sealed in an air-tight capsule and comes with a free display box.  Random from 1809 to 1836.
