Apollo 40th Anniversary 4 Coin Tribute Set

For decades, Americans have been fascinated by the space program that started in the 1950's and reached a climax with the landing of men on the moon on July 20, 1969.

The first coin in this set commemorating the 40th Anniversary of the Apollo moon landing is the Anthony Dollar that was struck in 1979 - the tenth anniversary of the landing.  The Susan B. Anthony dollar was struck from 1979-1981 and again in 1999 to honor woman's rights pioneer Susan B. Anthony.  The reverse of the coin is an adaptation of the official Apollo 11 mission patch showing an American eagle landing on the moon.  This symbolizes the Apollo 11 "Eagle" Lunar Module which brought the first men to the moon in 1969.  The eagle carries an olive branch of peace, and the Earth can be seen above its head.

The second coin is the 2009 John F. Kennedy Half Dollar, issued 40 years after the Apollo 11 Moon Landing.  On May 25, 1961 during a speech given before a joint session of Congress President John F. Kennedy expressed his goal:

"I believe that this nation should commit itself to achieving the goal, before this decade is out, of landing a man on the Moon and returning him safely to the Earth."

The next two coins are one-time-only State Quarters.  Each was minted for only about 10 weeks and can never be made again.

The first State Quarter with a space theme is the 2002 Ohio coin.  It features an astronaut in an Apollo-era space suit to honor two of America's most famous astronauts, both of whom are Ohio natives: John Glenn, who in 1962 became the first American to orbit the earth, and Neil Armstrong, who in 1969 was the first man to walk on the moon.

The second State Quarter with a space theme is the 2004 Florida coin.  Florida has been the home of the U.S. space program for decades, and Cape Kennedy has been the launching pad for all of America's legendary space missions, including the Apollo and Space Shuttle missions.  The coin depicts a Space Shuttle and is the first circulating U.S. coin to show a spacecraft.

All four coins are displayed in a box and come with a Certificate of Authenticity.
