This U.S. 3¢ piece is an unusual denomination that is almost unknown to today’s collectors. First minted in 1851, it was created to make it easier for people to buy a single 3¢ postage stamp (which was the cost of sending a letter at the time). But when postal rates dropped to 2¢, the coin was no longer needed.
The 3 Cent Nickel was designed by James B. Longacre, who also designed the Indian Head Penny. Due to a shortage of silver at the end of the Civil War in 1865, the U.S. Mint started making the 3¢ coin in nickel up until 1889, when minting of this coin ceased forever. Most nickel Three Cent coins were worn or damaged in circulation, however, the coin you will receive has been carefully hand-selected for exceptional collector quality.
