In 1916, America’s old Barber dimes were replaced by Adolph Weinman’s Winged Liberty Head design. In the most enduring case of mistaken identity ever, the figure on the coin's obverse has always been thought to be the Roman god Mercury, hence the name “Mercury Dime”. But in fact, the figure is really a depiction of Lady Liberty, the iconic American image which appears on virtually every other American dime except the Roosevelt. The model for Liberty is thought to have been Elsie Kachel Stevens, the wife of poet Wallace Stevens. The couple were Adolph Weinman’s tenants in a New York City brownstone. Mrs. Steven’s image was also used for the face of the Walking Liberty half-dollar, which Weinman also designed.

The Mercury dime is considered to be one of the most visually appealing of all U.S. coins, and is highly sought after by collectors. Minted from 1916 to 1945, these coins were in use from World War I, through the Great Depression, and on through the conclusion of World War II. Mercury Dimes were minted in Denver, San Francisco and Philadelphia, and you’ll find each mint mark to the right of the word “ONE” on the coin’s reverse. As is always the case with pre-1979 United States coinage, coins minted in Philadelphia are identified by their absence of a mint mark.
