1926 US Independence 150th Anniversary Half Dollar
America celebrated her 150th anniversary in 1926. As part of that defining event, the U.S. Mint issued a historic heirloom to commemorate both America’s birthday and her prominence on the world stage. Officially known as the Sesquicentennial of Independence Half Dollar, these coins were minted from .900 fine silver and were issued in order to raise funds for and promote the Sesquicentennial Exposition in Philadelphia.
Seldom seen today, it’s estimated that only one in seven of these coins remain for collectors due to various silver melt-downs over the years. The coin features a portrait of George Washington and Calvin Coolidge on the front, with a liberty bell on the reverse. The inclusion of Calvin Coolidge’s image marked the first time that a living President was featured on a U.S. coin.
The coin is encapsulated in clear plastic to protect its condition and comes with a free velveteen display box. Because of its age and rarity, this half dollar has been sourced in circulated condition.
