1913 First Year Buffalo Nickel - Raised Mound

This 1913 Buffalo nickel is of the Type 1 “Raised Mound” variety which was minted for just a few short months.  When the design elements on the coin began to show wear, it was quickly redesigned to flatten the mound and erase much of the detail that had been in the initial design.  This coin went on to become immensely popular for it celebrated the culture and heritage of the American West.  This first year of issue is a key date – and this is Fraser’s original Type 1 design.  In hand selected Extra Fine condition, this coin is still affordable and comes sealed in an air-tight capsule with a free display box and free shipping.

The Buffalo Nickel is one of America’s most beautiful coins.  The front depicts an Indian chief and is a composite portrait of three different men: Iron Tail (a Sioux Indian) Two Moons (from the Cheyenne Tribe), and John Big Tree (a Seneca Indian).  The back features a stunning image of a buffalo modeled after Black Diamond from the New York Zoological Gardens.  When the coin was first minted in 1913, the buffalo was already facing extinction due to overhunting.
